Symphony’s 2009-10 Concert Season
Includes Education Events

The West Valley Symphony announced an exciting calendar of events scheduled for northwest valley residents. A four concert series in Sun City and Sun City West venues will feature the works of master composers Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and more. One program will highlight show business legends such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, and Leonard Bernstein.

In addition to the concert series, the Symphony and Rio Salado College’s RISE Learning for Life have developed for the first time a series of three educational and fun events. The first of these community events is Oct. 16. It will start at 10:00am with “How Music Works – Adventures in Music Fundamentals” featuring Maestro Cal Stewart Kellogg. He will lead attendees in an interactive session focusing on basic intervals and chords. A break after the morning session will offer participants an opportunity to support Interfaith by visiting Birt’s Bistro and Bookstore, located next door on the Interfaith Campus. Birt’s offers specialty coffees, freshly made sandwiches and salads. At 1:00pm, participants will reconvene to hear a performance by the West Valley String Quartet. Similar events are scheduled for Jan. 15 and Mar. 5, 2010 and will cover the topics of opera and rhythm. The events are free and open to the public. They will take place on the Rio Salado/RISE campus at 12535 W. Smokey Drive in Surprise. Seating is limited; to sign up call RISE at (480) 377-4251.

“The Symphony’s four-concert season begins on Nov. 1 with Classical Favorites . Maestro Cal Stewart Kellogg will lead the professional orchestra in a performance of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, “The Italian” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3,”The Eroica”. The season continues on Dec.6 with Serenades featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Dvorák. On Jan. 24 the orchestra will perform selections from well-known musicals such as “The King and I”, “West Side Story” and “The Music Man” in the Hollywood Meets Broadway program. The season concludes on Mar. 14 with guest artist Tessa Gotman performing Brahms’ Concerto for Violin during the Melodic Masterpieces program.
