OCTOBER 10, 2008: The West Valley Symphony returns for their first full
season since they nearly went out of business several years ago. “The
Board of Trustees was so excited by the audience’s enthusiastic response to
our two Spring 2008 concerts that they couldn’t wait to begin planning an
entire season” said the Board’s President, Catherine Leas.
The Symphony’s four concert 2008-2009 season will run from November to April
with two concerts each in Sun City and Sun City West. Two local talented
maestros have been engaged to lead the professional 45 member orchestra.
Maestro Cal Stewart Kellogg will conduct the concerts on Nov. 2 and Jan. 11,
both at Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City. Maestro Warren Cohen
will conduct the Christmas Concert on Dec. 7 at Shepherd of the Hills United
Methodist Church and on Mar. 8 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church both in
Sun City West.
All concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 3 pm. A second Holiday performance
was added on Dec. 7 at 7 pm, to meet patron demand.
The Nov. 2 concert is titled “Romantic Contemporaries” and will feature
the orchestra’s popular long-time concertmaster, Cathy Worcester, performing
Massenet’s “Meditation from Thais” and Sarasate’s “Gypsy Airs”, concluding
with Dvorak’s famous “Symphony from the New World”. The Dec. 7 concert
is a Holiday Concert featuring well-known local vocalists Ken and Brenda Goodenberger
with Christmas favorites, as well as selections by Tchaikovsky, Handel and
Bizet. The Jan. 11 concert is “Melodies You Know” with works from Beethoven,
Rossini and Schubert, and the Mar. 8 concert is titled “French Romantics”
and features well-known pianist Walter Cosand performing a concerto by Saint-Saëns.
Tickets are priced at $25 for Adults and $15 for Youths and seating is general
admission. Full season tickets are available for $90, a ten percent
discount. Call (623) 236-6781 for tickets. Also check the Symphony’s
